Reining in the Rain !!

WES Wye Oak Summer Show

July 21 st 2007.

‘What could possibly go wrong’ Everything had been gone over carefully, venue all set, rosettes arrived, Judge and helpers arriving on the Friday, perfect timing being a teacher I had finished for the summer hols the day before so I could go up Friday morning. Little did I know I would be towing my horse through 1ft flash floods, yes you guessed it this was the weekend the South West of England flooded! I arrived at Wye Oak about 10.30am having taken 45 minutes to do the last 15miles, never mind the outdoor school would be flooded, there was always the indoor. No, that was underwater too, with Bob and Michael (both soaked to the skin) in the middle of it trying to dig channels for the water to escape; it looked like a building yard when tractors had been over it all winter. I couldn’t see how we could hold a show now and was beginning to consider how long it would take to ring round the 37 people that had entered and let them know it was cancelled, fortunately I held off. Miracles and hard work do happen I don’t know how Bob and Michael managed it but by lunchtime they had the school working again, I hate to think how many times they dragged the arena. The rain stopped and the floods subsided. Later watching the news we realised how lucky we where, we had got off lightly.

Saturday morning, competitors started to arrive. Paddy and Gina smith had swum over from Wales to expertly manage the collecting ring as always, Brenda Ditchfield did her usual high standard of scribing for the Judge (a good thing she was staying until Sunday she couldn’t have got back if she’d wanted to – home was an Island) and Chrissie Mayhew ably took on the role of secretary for the day. Believe it or not most classes were run outside, we had the occasional rain, the Open Trail getting the brunt of it, and the Horsemanship we had to move inside when heavy rain eventually arrived. But mostly we watched the clouds head our way and divide around us! The Reining we moved back outside and some very successful patterns were run. The show proved a great success, spectators sat on the bank to watch, four trade stands showed up and I would like to thank them for their generous sponsorship as well as Professional Choice, Maxwells and Myler bits. Prizes included Professional Choice boots, Montana Silver picture frames, £20 gift tokens from The Boot and Saddle company and prize money to 3 rd place. The atmosphere was fantastic everyone came prepared no one complained about the weather and as usual at a WES show everyone helped each other. It was great to see those competitors that had come to their first show enjoy themselves and do so well.

Bob Mayhew was kept busy dragging the arena, keeping everything moving and Nathan Haynes worked hard all day getting some excellent photographs of the whole affair. I would like to give a special thanks to James Gerdes-Hanson who flew in to be our judge for the day, he did and excellent job, put everyone at their ease, gave some helpful pointers and even with the weather as it was, said that he had thoroughly enjoyed himself! He even helped out at the clinic we held the following day for 12 riders with Bob – a lovely sunny day!

Lastly I would like to give a big thanks to Chrissie and Bob Mayhew for letting us invade their home for the weekend
